KENT ANDERSON BUTLER
PENETRATION

Exhibition Dates: March 4 - April 8, 2006
Opening Reception: Saturday, March 4, from 6 - 8 PM

Fringe Exhibitions is pleased to present the work of Kent Anderson Butler. This is the artist's first solo exhibition in Los Angeles. The show features three videos Holy Kiss, Lustration, and Sanctification in the main gallery and a video installation of the performance piece Penetration in the lower level of the gallery, also the title piece for the exhibition. Butler's work addresses issues of physical, mental, and spiritual phenomenon such as pain, pleasure, struggle, redemption and restoration. Holy Kiss is inspired by the universal custom of greeting as an act of communication. It places the viewer in the position of a voyeur. Lustration examines extreme acts of lust and desire. Sexually charged, the ceremonial purification calls into question gender roles. Sanctification alludes to the ritualistic act of consecration. A mixed blessing of sorts, the viewer is left to wonder about the topic of social health. Penetration is a site specific video installation of a performance by the artist that involves marksmanship, a bow, arrow, and target. Using methods of meditation and endurance Butler enacts a penetration of the soul.
