In this exhibition Michael Joaquin Grey plays with unifying a metaphysics of the micro, macro and media worlds. In his new computational film works and sculptures, Grey re-envisions critical moments in media and phenomena.
Proprioception : The unconscious perception of movement and spatial orientation arising from stimuli within the body itself. Past Proprioception: Oct. 4, 1957 - Oct 4, 2007 is a beautifully hypnotic and immersive meditation on internal and external space. This computational cinema work captures the essence of the artist's propioception with a universal avatar - the lost astronaut/cosmonaut moving through a range of fantastic visualizations of space, film objects and images. The space and figure are propelled and synaesthetically synchronized to sound tracks by the artist as well as other sound works. Time from the first launch of the Sputnik satellite 50 years ago, Oct. 4, 1957, continues until Oct. 4, 2007; dates echoed the event when humans entered and perished in space. Reentry revisualizes and dematerializes "The Powers of Ten", a reversal of childbirth, and the reentry of the first US astronaut back to earth. This computational film creates a generative and dynamic film object that scales relationships of form, growth, space, individual and cultural development simultaneously. Weather Reports are drawings cut from solid graphite, which capture the automatic proprioceptive movement of the artist. Michael Joaquin Grey's drawing and movement practice are independent of sight. He records the time: date, and location of these daily blind drawings. They are the foundation of much of the envisioning and perceptualization within his computational cinema works.
