Fringe Exhibitions is pleased to present installations by Bob Wysocki
(Main Gallery) and Jordan Biren (Lower Level).

Gobi, L.A. by Bob Wysocki is a contemporary earthwork made up of several thousand pounds of sand from the desert North of Las Vegas. Strategically placed fans will sculpt and create a sand dune on the floor of the gallery. It will change as the time passes; though exist within the confines of the space. The seemingly featureless structure comes into focus but with each passing minute the scale shifts from 2D to 3D and back again. Upon close inspection the dune is built and moves and shifts one grain at a time. The dunes inherent beauty is created simply by air moving over sand yet the complex influence of the air current upon its surface determines the articulation at any given moment. It is this simple physical phenomenology that creates an object of perfection, one of a kind, unrepeatable, slow, nearly immobile, temporal and temporary, meditative, minimal in form.

Robert Wysocki received his BA'89 in architecture from the University of California Berkeley and his MFA'95 from Yale University in sculpture. During the past five years he has been an assistant professor of 3-D, Conceptual Arts, and Entertainment Engineering Design at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Wysocki lives in Las Vegas with wife Jenny Wren and their son Max.



Video by Jordan Biren is survey exhibition of video work from 1990 - 2006 by Los Angeles artist, Jordan Biren. This exceptional multimedia exhibition explores the rugged psychological terrain of life and death, feelings and family, being and experience through imagery, sound, and text. Video includes ten video pieces presented in a special screening room created for the exhibition, a comprehensive full-color book, and an accompanying sound piece. At a time when quickly moving imagery is nearly as common as the nightly news, Biren's work stands out with its richly cinematic visuals and provocative emotional content. To experience Biren's video works is to enter into an alternate world, where the emphasis on shadow, depth, and mystery bear the footprints of an exploration into being and loss. Simultaneously, the artist's consistently rigorous interrogation of the medium of video itself forms the backbone of Video.

A graduate of the San Francisco Art Institute, and a student of Gary Hill, Biren has been working with the integration of image, movement, and sound since 1985. His video work has screened extensively in the United States at venues including the Berkeley Art Museum/Pacific Film Archive, San Francisco Cinematheque, Dallas Video Festival, Aurora Picture Show in Houston, and Christopher Grimes Gallery.
